InuYasha
InuYasha is a hanyou (Half Demon). He had a human mother and youkai father. He has a Taiyoukai brother by the name of Sesshoumaru that dislikes his youger brother for his human blood. Him and his brother have the same father but different mothers.
InuYasha's father and mother died a long time ago. He never knew his father but his mother died when he was a little boy. InuYasha's father left him the Tetsusaiga. In his right eye was left the gateway to the tomb to where the Tetsusaiga was located. The sword that can kill a hundred youkai in one strike. That attack is called the Kaze no Kizu. His mother left him the robe of the fire rat (which is stronger than an ordinary armor) and the shell with the lipstick. His mother was the only human to care for him until he met Kikyou.
Hanyou
Because InuYasha is a hanyou there is a period of time that he is completely human. All hanyou have a period of time that they're weaker. His is the new moon. Naraku can pick his because he's special.
Meeting Kikyou
InuYasha didn't officially meet Kikyou until after a fight with these three youkai. He was badly wounded in the fight and wanted a way to get stronger. He met Kikyou on the night of the new moon. At that time he didn't know what the Shikon no Tama was. He did find out later because of the centipede monster and attempted to steal it but she would pin him to the tree and tell him to stop making her waste arrows. She had no intentions of killing him and he had no intentions of killing her. Later InuYasha started following her around more and she would invite him out to talk. InuYasha's personality was very rude until one conversation he saw how truly sad Kikyou was and his personality from then on changed towards her.
InuYasha went everywhere that Kikyou went and she went everywhere he went. The two of course grew feelings for one another. They agreed on a plan for InuYasha to use the Shikon no Tama to become human then they could finally be together. He had no second thoughts. He wanted to be with Kikyou as a human. They thought that if the Shikon no Tama was used for good then Kikyou would be able to live as an ordinary woman with him.
Betrayal and Reawakening
Things did not go as planned. On the day that they were supposed to meet, InuYasha was attacked by the fake Kikyou and went to steal the Shikon no Tama from her village. He succeeded in stealing it but as he's running off the real Kikyou pins him to the tree where he stays sleep for 50 years. He is awakened by the cries for help from Kagome. She pulls the arrow out of him (to everyone's surprise) because he says he's strong enough to kill the centipede youkai. He does kill the centipede youkai but then goes after Kagome for the Shikon no Tama (which came out of her earlier) but Kaede puts the Kotodama beads around him giving Kagome power
over him when she yells "Osuwari."
Kagome
For awhile InuYasha is very rude to Kagome because her resemblence and scent is similar to Kikyou. He still believed that Kikyou had betrayed him. Kagome's personality little by little warms him over to her to the point where he starts having feelings for her and is able to trust again. Thier mutual friends (Sango, Shippou, Miroku, etc.) also help with the trust part.
Kikyou's Ressurection
When Kikyou is resurrected she quickly blames him and he accuses her and because of that InuYasha wonders why did it turn out so badly for them. He doesn't find out about Naraku until he meets up with Miroku. Miroku tells him all about Naraku and InuYasha realizes that it was Naraku who turned them two against each other. Naraku later confirms in an episode that it was him that turned them two against each other. InuYasha was willing in one episode to go to Hell with Kikyou but Kagome's voice prevented that from happening.
Who does he love?
InuYasha cares for and loves Kikyou and Kagome but he can't decide which one he loves more. He even asked Miroku once if he could have both (Kagome overheard that.) I think the show is pointing towards InuYasha and Kagome and if it does he will always have that love for Kikyou and Kagome knows that.
